When four-legged family members go missing
Contributed by: Lisa Burks on 9/23/2007

How many times have I passed by "Missing" posters on community bulletin boards and light poles?

The ones that feature the beloved furry or feathered family members who have been separated from their human companions.

Each time I see them, my heart aches and I pray for a happy reunion for the MIA pet. I can't remember ever actually seeing a poster and then thinking "I just saw that little critter the other day..."

And I wonder how successful these searches turn out to be.

Now, I'm in a position to find out for myself.

You see, my friend, Ani, has been missing since Wednesday, Sept. 19. She is an indoor/outdoor cat who resides with my boyfriend, Walter. She was an abandoned kitten in Long Beach a year ago when Walter's cousin rescued her and brought her to him live in Burbank.

Ani usually stays in her own backyard, or thereabouts. We've often remarked how she seemed to have everything she needed there - bushes, trees, birds, mice, leaves, the wind, a hammock, you name it.

Sometimes she'd wander down the alley, but when she'd hear any of us in the backyard, she'd come running toward us like a puppy after a Frisbee.

Wednesday she celebrated her one year Ani-versary with Walter and his three sons, and during the evening she was gifted with all kinds of kittenish treasures to play with.

And then, Thursday, she did not come home.

Nor did she Friday, or even Saturday. Not even when it rained, which made her absence all the more worrisome.

We've walked the neighborhood calling her name, whistling her special melody, asking passers-by if they'd seen her. She was not at the shelter nor was any cat fitting her description picked up by animal control recently, dead or alive.

We've posted her photo online with various lost pet sites, and now, I'm making posters to plaster the neighborhood with. You never think it will happen to you. But it does, and I pray just as hard for Ani's safe return as I have for other lost pets over the years. I hope my prayers are answered.

Ani is a little over 1 year old, is black-and-white with a mostly black face and "Phantom of the Opera"-type white marking mask on the left side of her face. She had a black spot between her shoulder blades that resembles a butterfly.

She was last seen at her home on Lincoln Street, 1/2 block south of Victory Boulvard andtwo blocks east of Buena Vista Street

If you've seen Ani, or have a tip on where to find her, please contact me at lisaburksonline@yahoo.com or call (818) 288-3380. Thank you.

What a beautiful face! I was fortunate enough to be someone who found a missing cat. I had just read the flyer put in my mailbox when I heard a meowing. Sitting close to some bushes in my front yard was *the* missing cat. I immediately called the phone number and within minutes, the crying owner came and got her cat. Hopefully that will be the same for you. Ani might be in someone's yard confused. We love our animals..... Marion
