Girl Scouts from all across the San Fernando Valley spent the weekend of Oct. 19-21 camping out in Woodley Park in Van Nuys.
More than 250 adult volunteers and 800 girls of all ages participated in the overnight camping event.
"This encampment was not only an active outdoors experience, it was a wonderful opportunity for girls to learn about our founder,
Juliette Gordon Low
, and to better understand how Girl Scouting has evolved over the past 95 years," says Event Director
Lois Young
. "Girls and adult volunteers came away with new skills, new friends, and hopefully a better sense of what it means to be a vital member of the worldwide Girl Scouting movement."
The weekend-long event was jam-packed with activities such as craft projects, technology workshops, a climbing wall, a rope bridge, first-aid workshops, dance clinics, and adventure games.
Various vendors and representatives from local organizations also participated, including LA Parks and Recreation, US Coast Guard Search and Rescue team, LA County Lifeguards, LA City Fire Department, TreePeople, San Fernando Valley Historical Society, Guide Dogs of America, and LA Dept. of Water and Power.
The weekend in Woodley Park coincided with an especially blustery season of Santa Ana winds, which at times made outdoor camping rather challenging.
"Fortunately, everyone who participated was required to have prior camping experience," says
Gerry Keshka
, CEO of Girl Scouts of the San Fernando Valley. "With strong winds such as we had Saturday night, it was really important to have basic outdoor skills, like knowing how to properly stake a tent."
The girls also enjoyed traditional Girl Scout activities such as singing songs around a faux campfire (an illuminated inflatable "fire"), and eating cupcakes to celebrate the 95th anniversary of the Girl Scouts founding.
