How to choose a karate school for your child
Contributed by: Michael Matsuda on 9/19/2007

The martial arts is a wonderful way to build confidence in your child. Many of the classes are fun, exciting and enhance balance and endurance. Some provide a unique form of discipline, respect and tradition. However, many martial arts schools have long term contracts, costly association fees or high expenses that you may not expect when selecting a martial arts school to enroll your child in. The Martial Arts History Museum is hosting a rare seminar this Saturday, Sept. 22 on what to expect when "choosing a martial arts school for your child."

In the 50s, the martial arts was virtually unknown to the American public. However, today, nearly every child will eventually enroll in a martial arts school. Though the martial arts will instill many great qualities, there are a number of things that every parent should be aware of when looking for a school for their child.

"How does a parent know which school to select their child? What is the difference between a long term or month-to-month contract? Does my child need a specific uniform? Why does he have to join an association? What is an association? What is a competition school versus a traditional school? What is the difference in styles? I can not stress the importance of this seminar," points of museum president Michael Matsuda. "We are not recommending schools, but we are telling you what you should look for and what you should be aware of. We want you to enroll your child to learn the martial arts, but we want your child to do something they will enjoy for a long, long time."

Hosted by an expert in martial arts business and industry, this seminar will take you through the nuts and bolts of school enrollment. "Martial arts schools range drastically in price. Some are conducted in YMCA's, some in community centers, others in commercial studios and others are even in people's garages," adds Matsuda. "But there's nothing worse than enrolling your child in a school they will hate. My father forced me to enroll in judo when I was eight and all they did was throw me all over the mat. I hated going to the class and couldn't wait till leave."

"You shouldn't choose a class just because it's close to the house, you need to choose one that you feel will be right for your child," concludes Matsuda.

The seminar will be held at 3 pm to 4:30 pm at the museum which is located at 24406 San Fernando Road in Santa Clarita. For info call 661 255-3322 or email info@MAmuseum.com. Entrance into the museum is required; $6 adults, $3 children.
