And the Emmy goes to ... Burbank teens
Contributed by: Colleen Felix on 8/25/2006

The city of Burbank Teens In Action program was recently honored with an Emmy for their youth related program "Violence: What's Love Got To Do With It". The program is a "for teens-by teens" program that explores the issue of dating violence, and the emotional and physical abuse that victims suffer when in a dating relationship.

The program competed against big names like Time Warner Cable and the city of Los Angeles in the 58 th Annual Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards Public, Municipal and Owner-Operated Cable category on August 12.

"The Teens In Action programs have been nominated the last three years, and we are so excited to have won this year," says Colleen Duffy Felix, city of Burbank Senior Video Production Associate and program co-producer. "The teens put months of hard work to, not only understand the topic, but to be comfortable enough with it to present it to their peers in an informative yet entertaining and hip way."

Victoria O'Neill, youth service coordinator for the city of Burbank Park, Recreation and Community Services Department and co-producer, thinks the show is a great opportunity for teens to discuss hard topics in a way that is safe and comfortable for them.

"The show gives the youth of our community a forum to safely explore difficult issues that they are being faced with everyday. I love the idea of teens-helping-teens."

The Teens In Action program is made up of a group of volunteer teens who are actively involved in all aspects of producing each show. They do grass-roots research, format the segments, gather experts and victims, and work side-by side with professional camera men, editors and producers to put together the final show.

Amaele Guerra, a Teens In Action member actively worked on the show. "I really like to go out on the street and talk with other teens." It's cool to see the kids get involved and give their thoughts on the topic. "

The Teens in Action program is a city of Burbank sponsored program resulting from the Mayor's Youth Task Force, a joint committee of youth related agencies in Burbank. Teens In Action shows were a result of the Democracy In Action project, a youth summit, survey and focus groups including all middle school and high school students in Burbank.

After recognizing that issues such as teen violence, drugs, sex, depression, eating disorders and discrimination were prominent amongst our teens, the Mayor's Youth Task Force recommended the Teens In Action program to the Burbank City Council.

The Teens In Action shows have now been integrated into the Burbank Unified School District ninth grade health curriculum. Other Teens In Action shows are Smoking: Slow Motion Suicide, The Truth about Drugs and Alcohol, and Sex: What you don't know will hurt you. Currently the Teens In Action team is working on a show for eating disorders.

The Teens In Action shows air on the Burbank Government Information Channel, seen on Charter Cable - Channel 6 in Burbank and Channel 16 in Glendale, and can be checked out from the Burbank Public Libraries.

Congratulations! I've seen a few of the programs on Channel 6 and they're really well produced. It's refreshing to see these issues/challenges discussed in such a frank and relatable way. Kudos to all those who appeared on camera. This is one of the Burbank City sponsored programs I certainly support.
