Dr.
Nageswar Rao Chekuri has been elected a 2008-2009 SENCER (Science Education for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities) Leadership Fellow by the National Fellowship Board of the National Center for Science and Civic Engagement.
Dr. Chekuri is professor of physics and chair of mathematics and natural sciences at Woodbury University in Burbank.
As a SENCER Leadership Fellow, he joins 75 other faculty and academic leaders across the country who will assist scholars who are interested in applying science and mathematics to pressing civic issues.
For example, one focus of the Woodbury SENCER team has been on the complex set of issues involving traffic. SENCER is the signature program of the National Center for Science and Civic Engagement, and focuses on stimulating student engagement in science and mathematics through courses and program focused on real world problems.
"A physicist committed to helping students become effective problem solvers, Dr. Chekuri has been a leader of Woodbury's efforts to develop a model transdisciplinary studies program. Nageswar's vision and energy have supported a broad adoption of SENCER ideals on campus," says
David Ferguson, distinguished service professor of Stony Brook University and SENCER board chair.
