Cub Scout
Tyler Roope has earned the Courage Award, a select honor bestowed upon Scouts in Cub Pack #225 who display exemplary strength and spirit in overcoming adversity.
Tyler was presented the award at the May 21 pack meeting at First United Methodist Church in Burbank.
"I was excited," said Tyler of receiving the trophy - his first ever.
Cub Scout leader
Joe Marinelli said the 9-year-old with the big smile serves as an inspiration to both children and adults in the pack.
"Tyler Roope deserves the Courage Award because he has the heart of the Scout," said Marinelli, who presented the award to Tyler. "He is struggling through difficulties not of his choice, but keeps a positive attitude, making him our 'Akela' - a teacher or leader who inspires others."
Tyler was born with spinal muscular atrophy, a neuron-muscular disease that affects all major muscle groups. Although he uses a wheelchair, he is an active Scout. His entire den is happy to help him achieve badges and rank advancements.
As Tyler said, "It doesn't matter how I get there, as long as I get there."
Some more difficult requirements have alternative requirements for Scouts with special needs and his den is extremely patient and helpful.
This year, Tyler won first place in his division in the Pinewood Derby, an annual event where Scouts race hand-made miniature wooden cars down a ramp.
Tyler has also been recognized by the Los Angeles Police Department's Valley Traffic Division and the Iron Eyes Cody District of the Boy Scouts of America for participating and completing Traffic Safety Day at Saint Francis Xavier Church on Feb. 10.
