Electives would expand their education
Contributed by: Kids Letters on 5/12/2008

TODAY'S TOPIC: If you could take a subject that isn't offered at your school, what would it be and why?

I would choose art because I like to draw all the time. When I grow up, I want to become an artist. I want to paint something like history. I want to interpret history through art.
Victor Paz, 10
Oxnard Street Elementary
North Hollywood

I would like to learn about repairing cars. I would like to do that because what if my car breaks down in the middle of nowhere? I would be able to fix it. Let's say you buy an expensive car but it breaks down. You can fix it. That is why I want to be a car repairman.
Robert Lopez, 9
Fernangeles Elementary
Sun Valley

I want to study astronomy because I need answers for my questions. How old are the planets? Was the moon ever considered a planet? How was the Earth formed? Will blackholes end space, planets and stars? Do blackholes last forever or do they get weak?
Israel Gutierrez, 10
Oxnard Street Elementary
North Hollywood

I would like to learn about art because it lets you express your feelings and it doesn't matter how you draw a picture. I like art because it is a class that lets you be yourself.
Priscilla Torres, 10
Lemay Elementary
Van Nuys

If I could pick a subject that we don't have at Oxnard Street, it would be a mechanic. I know they won't teach you mechanics in elementary but I hope in middle school they will teach me mechanics. I want to learn to be a mechanic because when I grow up I want to be a car racer and I want to know how to fix a car just in case I'm in the middle of nowhere.
Jorge Nuñez, 10
Oxnard Street Elementary
North Hollywood

If I could take a subject that I don't take in school, I would take cooking classes. I would take cooking classes because it's fun. It's fun because we get to make cupcakes and all the other fun things like that and the best part is that you get to eat it when you're done.
Allen Davidson, 8
Wilbur Elementary
Tarzana

There are a lot of things I want to study. I like history, chemistry, geography and I want to learn German. But history is great and I love Greece and Rome. I think Achilles and Augustus rock. History!
Gershom Zeller, 8
Wilbur Elementary
Tarzana

I would choose abstract art because it is like a rainbow all over. It has nice colors and nice shapes. It looks like the shirts that have the peace sign on them. Also, you can show your emotions with the paint. It is very fun and that is why I picked abstract art.
Joanna Alfaro, 11
Oxnard Street Elementary
North Hollywood

The topic that I would want to study in class is music. I would want to learn how music got started. Also, I would want to learn about classical composers like Beethoven.
Armando Castillo, 11
Lemay Elementary
Van Nuys

I want to know martial arts so I could defend myself. I could do cool moves, show off and win belts and medals. I would get really good at it and win a black belt.
Oscar Palacios, 10
Fernangeles Elementary
Sun Valley

I would choose oceanography and swimming. They're both fun to do. I like to swim because it feels good in my hair. I like animals under the ocean because they are interesting. How they have an extra sense is interesting to me.
Melanie Ramirez, 9
Wilbur Elementary
Tarzana

COMING UP: Do you get an allowance? If you get an allowance, do you save it or what do you buy? Do you think it's a fair amount? What do you have to do to earn your allowance? Draw a picture of you doing one of your chores.

Parents and teachers should make sure that the student's name, address, age and school are CLEARLY PRINTED on the letters and the backs of drawings.

Pictures should be drawn using black or dark blue ink on white, unlined paper. Drawings must be no larger than a standard, 8 1/2-by-11 inch sheet of paper.

The deadline is May 20 and letters will be posted May 27. Letters received after the deadline cannot be considered.
