Kids give their two cents on paying taxes
Contributed by: Kids Letters on 4/14/2008

TODAY'S TOPIC: We asked what should or shouldn't be taxed.

I think school things shouldn't be taxed or food because then those things will be harder to buy. Sometimes you don't know the things have tax and when you get to the cashier you don't have enough money, all because the things are taxed.
Jonathan Guzman, 10
Lemay Elementary
Van Nuys

I say gasoline shouldn't be taxed because a lot of people, after they get gas, might not have enough money for the house bill or electricity or the water bills because what if people don't have enough money to pay. Also, if they can't pay, they can't have electricity or water for their kids.
Anthony Lopez, 10
Lemay Elementary
Van Nuys

I think that the government should have tax money because if they don't have tax money, we don't have money. What I think should be taxed is cars and electric stuff. What I think should not be taxed is food and water. You need food and water to survive and if a homeless person needs food and water and they can't pay plus tax, that's a problem!
Taylor Silverstein, 9
Wilbur Elementary
Tarzana

The things that should be taxedare candy, junk food and chips. The reason why these things should be taxed is because they may be good but they're bad for you. The things that should not be taxed are clothes, foods and beds and blankets. The reason why is because they are really important for the world.
Prince Salvador, 10
Lemay Elementary
Van Nuys

The government needs tax money because they have to pay the president, fire departments and the people that fix the streets. I think drugs, cigarettes, alcohol and things that are bad should be taxed. The things that shouldn't be taxed are chocolates, ice cream and candy because they are yummy.
Hailey Schector, 8
Wilbur Elementary
Tarzana

The government needs tax money because the money goes to the government so the lawmakers can help the environment so we can have clean water and air. The things that should not be taxed are candy or popcorn at a theater because it's just a snack. The price always gets higher and higher.
Angela Catlett, 11
Oxnard Street Elementary
North Hollywood

I think school things should not have tax. I also think McDonald's shouldn't have tax. Also, electricity shouldn't. But I do think oil should have tax because we are running out of it and if it's cheap, lots of people will buy it and we'll run out.
Antonella Ortega, 10
Lemay Elementary
Van Nuys

If I could make the laws, I would tax cigars, alcohol and drugs. I think small items do not need any tax because they'resmall. I think cigars, alcohol and drugs need to be taxed a lot because they're bad for you. I think government needs taxes to build roads, train tracks and much more.
Andre Rabizadeh, 9
Wilbur Elementary
Tarzana

I think you shouldn't tax gas because some people can't afford gas and they won't make it to school or work and it's all because of taxes. A thing that should be taxed more is cigars because people die.
Jose Cisneros, 11
Lemay Elementary
Van Nuys

The government needs more money. If I could make the laws of things to be taxed, it would be that the only things that need to be taxed are any alcoholic drinks like beer and wine. The thing that shouldn't be taxed is food because we need food to stay alive. Also, they shouldn't tax fuel because it comes from certain places that are expensive. One more thing is that we don't want paper goods like toilet paper taxed because we use it everyday.
Vanessa Obeso, 11
Oxnard Street Elementary
North Hollywood

Government needs tax money because it's a law and they also need it to make the city more beautiful and to make the street better. I'm going to tell you what things shouldn't be taxed. They are snacks, popcorn, toilet paper, candy and tissues. Then the things that need to be taxed are tobacco, wine, drugs, beer, cigarettes and alcohol because they're bad for you. They should be more expensive so people will stop buying all those bad things.
Huber Pineda, 11
Oxnard Street Elementary
North Hollywood
