Cupid takes aim with Valentine's Day cards
Contributed by: Kids Letters on 2/11/2008

TODAY'S TOPIC: Valentine's Day is almost here. Who is your valentine?

My valentine would be a boy in my class. I am not going to say who it is because I don't want the whole world to know. Anyways, I would sign it saying, "From your secret admirer" with a heart at the end. I would design it in the shape of a heart. I would put another heart that is smaller on the front so he could see the two colors of Valentine's Day, red and pink.

My special valentine will be my teacher, Mrs. Ashley. I chose Mrs. Ashley because she has taught me so much in just a few months and that's why I admire her so much. I will sign her card with my name. On the front cover of her card, I will draw a big red heart with the words, "I'm glad you are my teacher!" On the inside, I will write a heartwarming note. It'll say, "I appreciate that you've taught me so well. I love your way of teaching! I'm glad you're my teacher!" On the back, I will have a pink heart thatwill have a picture of Mrs. Ashley and me. I can't wait to give Mrs. Ashley her valentine!

Wow! This is very nerve racking. My valentine is too secret to tell. But I can give you a few hints. Well, of course, it's a boy. He also has a funny smile. But that's all I can tell. I would actually sign it, "From: More than a friend." I would cut out hearts all around. I would also write, in big bold letters, "Happy Valentine's Day!" Next, I would glue a bunch of chocolates. PS. I would put a ribbon on top.

My valentine will be this boy that I like. He is a 5th grader. He is in this school, so we talk after school only. I will write it as a secret admirer. My valentine will have writing on it with a big heart on the side and I'll put the heart in red and other valentine colors. I will write, "Will you be my valentine?" Then, when I end, I will write, XXOO and, "from your admirer." If he says yes, I will tell him who I am.

My valentine is Jessy. She is not my girlfriend. She is just my friend. I would sign the card because I don't want to be involved in a mystery. I would design the card with Dodger things.

My valentine is B.R. My card would say, "Your secret admirer." I would design the card with hearts and XOXOXO. I love Valentine's Day.

My valentine is Ashlea. I would choose Ashlea because I like her. Yes, I would sign the card. What is there to be afraid of? I will put hearts on the card and give chocolate to her.

My valentine is my mom. The card would be a heart-shaped card. It would also have little hearts in pink and red. It would have this poem inside it:
Roses are red
Violets are blue
I'm glad to be with you!
This card means how much I love my mother. I would say it was from me because she would love the card.

My valentine would be my BFF, Bianca Sanchez, because she is my best friend and we like playing around together. What it would have inside is a sign that says, "True Friendship." It would be a really strong card from the deep bottom of my beloved heart. PS. BFF means Best Friends Forever.

My valentine is going to be my mom. I think I will sign it by my name. I will design it by putting red and pink hearts and I will write that I love her and that she is the best mom in the world.

Meet my superb valentine. My valentine is my mommy. I would make a card that has mammoth hearts. Inside the card it would say, "Happy Valentine's Day!" I would write inside how helpful and sweet she is. I would write my real name in the card because I am not embarrassed to use my name. I wonder what my mom will look like when she sees my card?

Valentine's Day is my favorite holiday. My valentine is at the table in front of me. Maybe I will sign the card "admirer" so it's a mystery. All my cards will be made by hand because I don't have to waste my money on cards that people will just pick the chocolate off of and ignore the card.
Nayelli Mejia, 9

My valentine is my sister. I choose my sister because she is kinda cool except for the time she crashed into some trash cans on her bike. I couldn't breathe, I was laughing so hard! I would make my card a cool one. It would be a cop card with a huge badge in front. Inside, I would write about all the fun times we've had.

My valentine is Christina. No, I would not sign the card. I would design it with squares and triangles. I would write, "Hi."

COMING UP: Newspapers are one of our oldest forms of communication. What are some of the things you can learn from newspapers? If you could design a newspaper, what would you name it and why? What kind of stories and pictures would you put in it? Draw a picture of the front page of your newspaper.

Parents and teachers should make sure that the student's name, address, age and school are CLEARLY PRINTED on the letters and the backs of drawings.

Pictures should be drawn using black or dark blue ink on white, unlined paper. Drawings must be no larger than a standard, 8 1/2-by-11 inch sheet of paper.

The deadline is Feb. 19 and letters will be posted Feb. 26. Letters received after the deadline cannot be considered.
