TODAY'S TOPIC: We asked what is a hobby and do you have one?

A hobby is something you like to do. It can be anything you want. It can be making pottery, collecting stamps, collecting snow globes, anything like that. To have a hobby keeps you active and it can be fun to have a hobby. My hobby is to play the guitar. In the future, I would like to collect shiny rocks or collect stamps.

A hobby is what can do when you have spare time. I think it's important to have a hobby. If you don't have one and you have spare time, what can you do? You have to just sit there and waste your precious spare time! But if you have one, you don't waste your time! Another reason it's important to have a hobby is that you can explore new things outside of your regular activities. My hobbies are playing soccer and reading. I am glad I have hobbies that I can do in my wonderful spare time. By playing soccer, I learn how to play as a team. By reading, I enhance my vocabulary. I enjoy my hobbies.

My hobby is collecting shells. Shell collecting became my hobby a few years ago. It all began when my cousin Amira gave me a whole bunch of her shells that she had bought here in California. After that, I bought and found shells and my collection just got bigger and bigger. Then one day, I had a big glass jar and a basket full of shells. I enjoy collecting shells because I get to see all the different types of shells which is very interesting if you like shells like I do. I look forward to many more years of collecting!

My hobby is skateboarding because it's lots of fun. I've been skateboarding for five years. My cousin is the one who taught me. I skateboard almost every day outside by myself. Skateboarding is the best thing I've ever done. I also like skating because it's something I can have doing. Every time I fall off my board, I just get back up and try it again. The first move I learned is called an Ollie.

My favorite hobby is piano. Piano is a great instrument. In my spare time, I like to practice piano and learn new notes and songs. I like playing Beatle songs and Disney songs because they are fun to play. I have a great teacher and nobody's piano teacher is as good as mine. Piano is my favorite instrument and I think everyone should like piano.

I've got a hobby but it's a sport. My favorite sport is hiking. It's fun, especially wearing the comfortable shoes, but you have to wear certain shoes. The reason I like to hike is because it's just fun.

To me a hobby is a thing or something that you could understand, that you want to do and if you love to do it, then that is your hobby. If you love collecting stickers, rocks, baseball cards or playing soccer, handball, kickball or basketball. My hobbies are to paint and collect stickers. I love to paint because it lets me express my feelings and the stickers, I just collect them because I think they're so pretty.

COMING UP: If you could have lunch with anyone from the past or present, who would it be and why? Where would you go for lunch, what would you eat and what would be the topic of conversation? Draw a picture of you and your guest at lunch.

Parents and teachers should make sure that the student's name, address, age and school are CLEARLY PRINTED on the letters and the backs of drawings.

Pictures should be drawn using black or dark blue ink on white, unlined paper. Drawings must be no larger than a standard, 8 1/2-by-11 inch sheet of paper.

The deadline is Jan. 22 and letters will be posted Jan. 29. Letters received after the deadline cannot be considered.
