A day in the Verdugo Mountains
Contributed by: Carol Mercado on 12/18/2007

Hikers and trail runners had a great time in the Verdugo Mountains on Nov. 3 at the annual Verdugo Hills Community Hike.

About 150 participants and volunteers started out from Brand, La Tuna Canyon or Stough Canyon Nature Center and hiked or ran to the Fire Warden's Grove or the old youth campground.

Once at their final destination, participants were treated to tortilla wraps and other refreshments. The cost of much of the food was offset by donated gift cards from Ralphs and Vons grocery stores.

Martino's Bakery also donated its delicious teacakes for the volunteers and hikers. Boy Scout Troop 201 helped out with serving the food and G.E.A.R.S. and B.E.A.R.S. made communicating with all the different sites much easier.

The Burbank nature docents came through by volunteering at all three registration sites, carrying supplies to the Hike Lite destination and performing many other duties.

The event is a coordinated effort with the cities of Glendale and Burbank and held every year around the first or second Saturday of November.
