Girl Scouts across the San Fernando Valley are getting ready for summer camp at Camp Lakota, their resident camp 75 miles north of Los Angeles in the Los Padres National Forest.
Rustic but comfortable, Camp Lakota offers girls a traditional outdoor camp experience, with activities such as swimming, horseback riding, archery, volleyball, basketball, hiking, badge work, outdoor skills, games and team-building exercises. Evenings are devoted to favorite camp activities such as All-Camp campfires.
Camp sessions run from June 18 to Aug. 18, and last either five, seven, or 14 days. Five-day programs give campers a taste of traditional activities such as hiking, swimming, and horseback riding. A five-day "Just the 2 of Us" session for girls and a significant adult female in their lives provides a memorable bonding experience. There are also seven-day equestrian programs for riders of all levels, and seven-day programs focusing on art, magic, drama, "CSI"-inspired activities, sports and nature. Older girls may also sign up for a 14-day program to develop equestrian skills, or a 14-day "Extreme Survivor" experience.
"We're really excited about our 'Extreme Survivor' session," says Girl Scout outdoor education program manager
Rebekah Miller
. "The girls will have a chance to do all sorts of fun reality TV-style challenges, and go on an overnight hiking trip. It'll be an amazing experience for them."
Camp staffers are fully trained in water safety, outdoor and wilderness skills, and first aid. Girls do not need to be Girl Scouts when they sign up for camp, but must be registered Girl Scouts before arriving at Camp Lakota. All campers must have had a physical examination within the past two years, and need to submit a medical history form signed by a physician, physician's assistant, or nurse practitioner.
Financial aid in the form of "camperships," provided by Girl Scouts of the SFV and corporate donors, is available to girls whose families cannot afford camp fees. For registration materials and information, please contact Rebekah Miller at 818-886-1801, extension 13, or via email at rmiller@sfvgsc.org.
