Burbank City Council will vote on a controversial second-hand smoke control ordinance at Tuesday's Council meeting, designed to protect residents from the health dangers and nuisance of cigarette smoke in public places.
Second-hand smoke has been proven to cause adverse health effects including cancer, cardiovascular disease, respiratory infections, asthma, and nasal problems. The intent and purpose of this ordinance is to control and limit second-hand smoke exposure by prohibiting smoking at locations throughout the city where the public would otherwise typically be involuntarily exposed to second-hand smoke, such as downtown Burbank pedestrian areas, outdoor dining, gathering and event areas, outdoor shopping areas and centers, and the like.
The ordinance still allows people to smoke in their homes, cars and on sidewalks in residential areas. There will be designated smoking areas set aside in major commercial centers to provide a place where smokers can still smoke, but without harming the majority of adults who don't, and their children.
The public hearing will take place Tuesday, March 27 at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers, 275 E. Olive Avenue, Burbank, second floor.
A standing-room-only crowd and some very lively debate is expected prior to Council deliberations and the vote. The proposed second-hand smoke control ordinance is available on the City of Burbank Web site at www.burbankca.org/planning/smoking.shtml.

Also, Burbank Mayor
Todd Campbell
will appear live on NBC's Today in L.A. morning show between 5 and 7 a.m., Tuesday March 27.

Some people are just too rich to see what the real dangers in Burbank are and I rate this as just stupid.

Mayor Campbell has been an embarassment to the citizens of Burbank and this is just one more example of how out of step with reality he really is. While the mayor is so concerned with second hand smoke he votes to overbuild our city and over building is not good for the environment or for our children. This is no achievement at all and the two gadflies that are so concerned about this should find something worthwhile to be concerned with.

In case you missed it, the Burbank City Council lead by Mayor Campbell, Vice-Mayor Ramos and Councilmen Vander Borght voted 3-2 (NO-Gordon/Golonski) to adopt a SHS Control Ordinance that protects us from known health dangers and the public nuisance of SHS smoke, while still providing designated smoking areas (DSA's) where smokers can light up to satisfy their nicotine addiction. Some restaurants & hookah businesses with larger patios will be able to establish smoking areas, providing they properly mitigate SHS airflow.
