A health fair to educate the public on how to prevent a stroke and how to determine their stroke risks will be held from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, May 19, atProvidence Saint Joseph Medical Center in the Hope Conference Center, 501 S. Buena Vista St., Burbank.
The health fair will include free screenings on stroke and heart disease - including cholesterol, carotid artery, blood pressure and diabetes screenings. Physicians will be available to answer questions. The health fair will include gifts, raffles and refreshments.
Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center is holding a stroke prevention fair as it prepares to build a $11 million Neuroscience and Stroke Institute that will offer leading edge procedures and technologies for the prevention of stroke and the treatment and rehabilitation of stroke patients.
The institute will be integrated with the medical center's acute rehabilitation unit and its neurological outpatient program, which has been caring for stroke and neuro-related patients for more than 35 years.
Physicians and other medical experts will be on hand, including
Melvin Belafsky, M.D., a neurologist and medical director of the Providence Saint Joseph Stroke Center, and
David Mok, M.D., FACC, a cardiologist on the Medical Staff at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center.
Approximately 700,000 Americans each year suffer a new or recurrent stroke. That means, on average, a stroke occurs every 45 seconds. Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States.
