More than 300 women in the community came to Verdugo Hills Hospital to have a discounted screening mammogram done during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October and hospital staff are hopeful that even more women will take advantage of the unique service next year.
Every year, the
Dixie Lee Ratliff
Breast Healthcare Center, located at the hospital, offers discounted screening mammograms for a cash price of just $55 during the month of October. The service is available to all women in the community, aged 40 years or older. This year, 309 women had a discounted screening mammogram, compared to 296 last year.
Regular screening mammograms are an essential step in detecting breast cancer in its earliest stages before a lump becomes visible to the eye or can be felt by hand. Statistics have shown early detection greatly increases patient survival rates against the disease.
"The hospital and the staff of the Medical Imaging department are always proud to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and this year was no exception," said
Scott Cameron
, director of Medical Imaging. "I would like to thank all of the employees, who through their direct involvement or by making a donation, have helped us to provide low-cost screening mammograms to our community. It is a service that we are committed to providing."
President and CEO
Leonard LaBella
said it is very important that as many women as possible realized that a simple annual screening mammogram could save their lives.
"Research has shown just how important screening mammograms are to early detection and improved cancer survival rates," LaBella said. "Our discounted mammograms service makes this life-saving tool more affordable and accessible to all women in the community."
