Give your immune system a shot in the arm
Contributed by: Tracey Laity on 10/27/2006

Verdugo Hills Hospital is offering free flu immunizations to seniors in the community on Friday, Nov. 17, from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.
Influenza is a highly contagious disease that can lead to pneumonia, especially among seniors, said Linda Greenwood, a registered nurse, Verdugo Hills Hospital's infection control nurse.

"Good hand hygiene and flu shots are important to staying healthy during the cold and flu season," Greenwood said. "People need to get immunized every year because the virus changes, which means the serum also changes to combat the most common flu strains at the time."

The flu shots will be provided to residents in the community aged 60 years and older in the hospital's Council Rooms on a first come, first served basis until supplies run out.

The shots are also available to people who have been under a doctor's care for long-term health or lung problems, anyone who has been admitted to a hospital within the past year for treatment of kidney disease, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, anemia or severe asthma, and people who had a type of cancer that lowers the body's normal resistance to infections, she said.

For more information, call the hospital's flu hotline on (818) 949-4003.
