Not from Japan, but from the Class of Summer 1959 at Van Nuys High School.
Stacy Keach
was our class president.
Once a month, we meet for breakfast at the Village Café which is attached to the Canoga Park Bowl at the corner of Vanowen and Winnetka.
This year, and early next year we are all turning 65. Ah, the joys of Medicare and trying to figure out what is the best supplemental insurance and prescription plan. But I digress.
It was suggested that we have a mutual 65th birthday celebration at a restaurant in the San Fernando Valley that 1) existed when we were in high school and 2) is still in business in the same location. The list turned out to be pretty short.
Most of the old places are gone or have moved. Gone are The Pump Room, The Rams Horn, Chris & Pitts, Mike's Pizza, Corky's, Phil Ahn's Moongate and the Fireside Inn to name a few. Barone's is still in business, but has moved.
Our list came down to these: Bob's Big Boy, Rusty's Hacienda, the Smoke House, Sportsmen's Lodge, DuPars, Antonio's Pizzeria, Casa Vega, Ernie's Mexican Restaurant and Micelli's.
After much debate, Bob's Big Boy won out. The location we used to go to was on Van Nuys Boulevard, but the location in Burbank qualified using the aforementioned criteria.
So, Saturday, Oct. 14, 2006 was the date. Attending (birthday in parentheses) were Larry Berliner (September 18), Bruce Bromberg (October 31), Bob Mercer (November 4), Bob (The Kid) Schoenburg (February 4) and Cindy Seitz (September 28). Our spouses were invited, and all attended except for Larry's wife, Barbara because the Berliner's now live in Denver, and Larry happened to be in town on a personal matter.
We ordered a variety of dishes: The Original Big Boy, the Classic, Patty Melt and the Spaghetti Chili Size. Two of us had breakfast dishes. (Huh?)
A good time was had by all as the accompanying photos show.
