Sunday, Oct. 8, was the 10th Annual Walk for Hope. This year's fundraiser drew almost 8,000 participants to the City of Hope. They came for different reasons: some to remember a family member or friend who lost the battle against cancer; some to honor survivors; still others came for the fun and friendship the day had to offer.
I walked for two reasons. The first was to represent my company and department. As the manager of food services for the City of Hope, we had pulled together a team of 21 members, raising over $1,000. The second reason I walked is personal as my wife of 31 years, Yvonne, is a four-years survivor of breast cancer.
I remember the day her doctor first said there was a spot on her last mammogram, andthat he wanted her to have a biopsy. He was pretty sure it was nothing more than fatty tissue but wanted to verify it. Well, the biopsy came back with bad news: there were paper-thin malignant cancer cells present. The next year was a blur of tests, surgeries, and lots of hospital visits. Four years later, she is a strong survivor!
On Sunday, we were joined by several of my staff who had signed up for the walk, including little Martha who raised $160 in sponsorships. Walking with us were Peggy and her husband - Gator Dave (it's really "Guitar" Dave but his license plate could be read either way). We walked the 5K and even ran into Olivia Newton John, who stopped to asked who we were walking for (my wife) and then asked Yvonne how long she's been a survivor. My wife was touched by the genuine compassion shown by Olivia.
What's your motivation? Is there a reason you give back to the community? Whatever your cause, make it a passion. When we give, we get back as much, if not more. I not only walk for my wife but I walk for me, because I believe in giving.
