Rodents are everywhere in our community. They invade our homes and our businesses. Getting rid of them can be repulsive and time consuming.
Los Angeles County Department of Health Services recommends using snap traps, glue boards and poison baits.
None of these methods can be considered even remotely humane, not to mention the fact that they are environmentally hazardous.
There is a better answer. Feral or semi-feral cats are also everywhere. By their mere presence cats can eliminate pests from your property. The smell of the cats will have mice and rats running for the hills. Those that remain will be hunted out the door.
There are many feral cats brought to our city shelters that are unneccessarily destroyed because they are not wanted in the community. By utilizing feral cats to control the rodent population, here is the added bonus of being able to save some of these deserving lives.
People who own barns are ideal candidates for this type of program. Companies operating industrial facilities would benefit. The LAPD has been using feral cats for years at various police stations with great success.
The volunteers of the Burbank Animal Shelter would like to encourage everyone to consider adopting a feral cat to solve their pest issues safely and naturally.

What a great story, and a good idea too. I have two cats but they are indoors only. I have horses, a couple barns and mice and rats. The "Tom Cat" bait that I've used in the past no longer interestes them and the rodents are getting bigger on the grain. My question: How do you make a feral cat stay on your property? I would gladly have a couple, and feed them too, but if they leave... well we are in a coyote area. And won't feeding them make them NOT want to hunt? Any answers?
