What's new in the Verdugo Mountains?
Contributed by: Carol Mercado on 6/1/2007

The Stough Canyon Nature Center contributors have done it again!

The Burbank Rotary Club has put two new benches up off of the Stough Canyon Fire Road in the Verdugo Mountains. This makes a total of six benches that the club has donated and put together.

No easy task this time around. The six hearty Rotarians had to hike about 1/2 mile to where the bench parts were dropped off and then put the benches together. The benches are located on a flat area commonly known as "The View."

Although it does overlook the city landfill, it also is a great place to see all of Burbank, downtown Los Angeles and parts of the San Fernando Valley. The other benches donated and installed by the Rotary Club are located along the fire road at different stragetic points for resting and viewing the local flora and fauna.

A portion of the money needed for one of the benches was donated by Colleen Koll, a regular hiker and volunteer with the Burbank nature programs.

Nature Docents Tuong Hua, June Box and Sandie Wolfe, along with other volunteers, helped Eagle Scout Kevin Ramnarine fromTroop 179 install some other interesting benches farther up the main fire road. Those benches, designed by Hua, resemble something more of a lounge chair and are a welcome site for many who hike or bike that far.

If you use our trails, you might notice new trail signs as well. They are designed to help you find your way without obstructing your view. Eagle Scout Wade Lucas and Troop 201 initiated the project and installed six signs.

Marcus Moore and Troop 179 installed four four more signs as part of his Eagle Scout project. Thanks for those much needed signs.

Closer to the nature center is our great little Plant Walk, initially started by Girl Scout Troop 1718. Since then, Girl Scout Troop 17, Boy Scout Troop 201 and most recently Boy Scout Troop 179 have contributed many plants and hard work.

Be sure to check out Erik Buth's Eagle Scout project of making steps and widening the path. In addition, Nature docents Bill Hadsell, Alice Shinmoto and Colleen Koll have contributed to the Plant Walk as well.

A big, big thank you to all our organizations and individuals who through their generous contributions have made our Verdugo Mountains even more enjoyable.
