Alliance Repertory Company, the Burbank-based theater group that recently celebrated its 20th anniversary, announced the appointment of its new artistic director,
Royana Black
.
Ms. Black began her theatrical career at age 11 as a cast member of the Broadway production of
Brighton Beach Memoirs
. She subsequently worked on shows at Playwrights Horizons, WPA Theatre, Double Image and Williamstown Theater Festival.
Royana graduated from Yale, where she worked with Yale Rep. After college, she founded the non-profit Ergo Theatre Company in New York, which produced

, and more.
She was also a pioneer artist at New River Dramatists, a non-profit organization at Healing Springs, North Carolina devoted to the development of new works with a focus on playwrights, with a roster that includes

, and more. Additionally, Royana appeared numerous times on television as a guest or series regular in episodics.
In the last two seasons at the Alliance Repertory Company, Royana has been a producer and actress for

(a short play anthology created by the company's women), and a producer and director for the Alliance's 20th Anniversary show,

(a program of short plays).
Her first works as the Alliance's artistic director include the current show by Ms.

, a time-traveling romance in which Royana plays one of the leads; and the Alliance's segment of Pulitzer Prize winner
Suzan-Lori Park

365 Days/ 365 Plays
, playing nightly at the Alliance during the week of Dec. 11.
