A Tango Legend Continued ...
Argentine tango dancer and instructor
Orlando Paiva Jr., a native of Rosario, Argentina, carries on the legend of his father, world renowned instructor, Orlando Paiva Sr., by teaching their distinctive salon style of Argentine tango to Southern Californians in the United States. The popularity of Tango has grown immensely throughout the world: in Los Angeles alone, there is a place to go dancing every evening.
Also known as
TheDevil of Elegance, Paiva Jr. is continuing the efforts to spread the
sensual and romantic dance of Argentine tango by also producing
Tango Masquerade, the First International Halloween Tango Weekend in Los Angeles -a three-day festival offering tango workshops, milongas, live tango music by Ensamble De Tango Del Café Buenos Aires, a gala dinner show by the Otero Dance Company and performances by master Argentine tango instructors-taking place
Oct. 31-Nov. 2, 2008 at the Marriott Burbank Airport Hotel & Convention Center.
His father,
Orlando Paiva Sr. (Dec. 1 1935-Nov. 28, 2006), a native of Rosario, Argentina, had danced and taught tango since the 1950s and is credited with introducing
Argentine Tango Salon Style to Los Angeles and Bay Areas, coming here to teach
workshops throughout the 1980s. He had been the teacher of Argentine to many famous people, including
Madonna and Sean Penn, as well as actor
Robert Duvall, and was featured in the film,
"Assassination Tango," written and directed by Duvall, who was a regular student of his.
Paiva Sr. worked with such respected musicians as Tita Merello, Julio Sosa, Edmundo Rivero and Miguel Montero and danced to the orchestras of Osvaldo Pugliese, Jorge Caldara, José Basso and Leopoldo Federico.
He was known to the tango community around the world as one of the most elegant, distinctive and respected Argentine tango dancers and teachers.
Orlando Paiva Jr., a renowned Argentine tango dancer in his own right, carries on the legacy of his father's smooth, elegant and distinctive style of tango. His precision footwork and elegant posture have captured the attention of dancers across the globe, inspiring them to learn what has become to be known as the "Paiva Style."
Born and raised in Rosario, he has taught and performed in Buenos Aires, in Europe and all over the U.S. where the people fell in love all over again (or for the first time) with this romantic and elegant style of tango that is such a hallmark of the Paiva legacy.
Orlando has appeared on Santa Monica
CityTV's show "Coffee Break" and with his dance partner
Laura Tate on
Telemundo's television show "Buenas Dias" showcasing Argentine culture and the dance of tango. He is the co-founder of the Brujo Tango Congress in Reno, Nevada, and has been a major participant in congresses in Buenos Aires and throughout the U.S.
Laura Tate is the Associate Publisher and Editor of
The Malibu Times weekly newspaper and the bimonthly
Malibu Times Magazine.
She fell in love with the dance of tango several years ago-then fell in love with a master of tango-and has been enthralled ever since.
In addition to her day job as editor, she assists Orlando in classes, and performs with him throughout the United States and in Argentina. She is a co-producer of this event.
