Burbank YMCA takes health intervention to new site
Contributed by: Susan Sebastian on 7/30/2008

The Burbank Community YMCA will take its health intervention program for kids, called H.I.P. Kids, to Fernangeles Elementary School in the fall.

This was made possible through efforts organized by Tower General Contractors Vice President Alex Guerrero. He, along with 23 other local businesses, came together to support this much-needed program.

Tower General Contractors is located in the same neighborhood as the school and Guerrero said, "I really feel compelled to support this program."

"The H.I.P. Kids program is a terrific example of how the Burbank Community YMCA is fighting childhood obesity," said JC Holt Jr., CEO. "To win the fight, we know we must influence both children and their parents by educating them on how to make healthier choices. We are pleased to help Principal Karen Jaye at Fernangeles Elementary School and are so glad she reached out to us."

Don St. Clair, vice president of the board of directors, added, "Forming a partnership with Alex and Tower General Contractors, then reaching out to the larger business community, demonstrates the positive impact business and service organizations like the YMCA can have on a community."

The H.I.P Kids program is a 12-week program designed for children ages 8-14, who are considered at-risk because they are at unhealthy weights.

Led by professionals in exercise science and nutrition, the program provides children and their parents with behavioral modifications to increase physical activity and improve nutritional choices.

Rewards and incentives are built into the program to provide both motivation and fun.

Other businesses that contributed were Talimar Systems, M&M Floor Covering, D&D Door and Hardware, Hayat Painting and Wallcovering, A-Tech Systems, Inc, Xpress Electric Company, Fast Forward Concrete Cutting, West Coast Air Conditioning, All American Acoustics, Smallcomb Wiring, South Bay Framing and Drywall, Elite Tile Company, Alliance Mechanical Group, JD-CMC Inc., Knauf Insurance Agency and C&D Bonding and Insurance Services.
