Girl Scout volunteers feted at recognition dinner
Contributed by: Kimberlie Nitti on 11/15/2007

Girl Scouts of the San Fernando Valley hosted its annual Adult Recognition Night on Nov. 3, honoring several dozen adult volunteers.

The evening's most notable awards went to longtime Girl Scout members Laurel Pavone and Margaret "Peg" Tamberella.

Laurel received the "Thanks Badge," one of the highest honors bestowed by Girl Scouts USA. The recognition is bestowed to an individual whose service is significantly beyond expectations and benefits his or her local Council and the entire Girl Scout organization.

Laurel was nominated for this award by numerous colleagues in recognition of her many years of service to better the lives of girls and families throughout the San Fernando Valley.

Some of the Girl Scout programs and events that she has contributed to over the years include World Thinking Day (celebrating Girl Scouting around the globe), council-wide "encampments," sea mariner competitions, and training leaders and staff members in everything from cookie sales to first-aid.

Peg was recognized as the Girl Scouts of the San Fernando Valley Council's "Woman of the Year." This extremely prestigious award is not presented annually, but only when it is deemed appropriate to recognize an individual whose outstanding efforts have benefited youth throughout the community.

Peg has been actively involved with Girl Scouts of the San Fernando Valley for 37 years, inspiring girls to develop civic and social responsibility and devoting herself to the selfless service of others.

A longtime volunteer and coach for the Special Olympics, Peg has also served as a Girl Scout leader for a troop of girls with "special needs" and has organized beach cleanups, holiday food drives, and countless other community service projects.

"Both Peg and Laurel are true assets, not only to the Girl Scout community but to the entire San Fernando Valley community," says Gerry Keshka, CEO for Girl Scouts of the San Fernando Valley. "They are women of courage, confidence, and character who genuinely represent the core values and mission of Girl Scouting."

Other top honors went to Mary Murdock, Cindy Rodarte Tenn and Kristina Weprin, recipients of the Distinguished Service Award, and Dana Armendariz, Nancy Mitchell and Geraldine Walters, who were awarded the Honor Pin.
