Meyiha! That's how the Gabrielino-Tongva tribe greeted the crowd at the Native American Celebration held on July 1 at the Stough Canyon Nature Center.
The event had good food, crafts, music, toolmaking and the wonderful Tongva Nation Dancers. Tribal Chief
Anthony Morales
educated more than 100 people about the beautiful regalia the dancers were wearing and the meaning of the different dances.
We learned that the Gabrielino-Tongva region covers from Orange County all the way north to almost Ventura County. We also found out what plants were used for food, ceremonies, musical instruments and tools.
As with the past few years, the delicious Stough Canyon version of Native American tacos were cooked and served by staff members
Lela Moore
and
Linda Bailey
and volunteers
Sandie Wolfe
,
Marcus Moore
,
Alice Shinmoto
and
Vivian Kim
. Other volunteers helped lead the crafts and toolmaking, sold tickets and gave out information. They included
Maria
and
Luca Shaefer
,
Kerri
and
Jacqueline Tobin
,
Marie Ammerman, Mary Tyler, Charlotte and Henry Marston
and
Tuong Hua
. Also providing valuable assistance for the event were staff members
Mike McHorney
,
Rachel Ross
,
Ian Adams
and
Seth Oseransky
. Thanks to all who helped and participated.
Ya-mo Hene.
The next big special event is always a fun and scary time for all who attend. It is the annual Haunted Hike. This is not as much a hike as an indoor/outdoor haunted house. This year those creative nature docents will turn the Nature Center into a very scary and haunted circus. The event will be held on Oct. 19 and 20 with the $5 tickets being sold from 7 - 9:30 p.m. each night.
The Stough Canyon Nature Center offers a variety of nature-oriented special events and weekly activities throughout the year so come by the Center and pick up a schedule. Call (818) 238-5440 for more information on all of the Stough Canyon Nature Center activities.
