Blog Entry 1 of 68 The Forgotten Sports
Basketball, softball, or volleyball - ever notice only the top 20 teams get covered? There just isn't enough print space to feature all teams. I have shot youth sporting event photos free of charge for over 15 years. Ask me about shooting your team and their next tournament; I will also write about it for all to read. During Winter 2006, I will be found at Olive Recreation Center, in Burbank - shooting ASA fall ball. RYTAC

Fall Ball - Gem of the Southwest
Contributed by: Richard Colon   on 9/2/2006

If you keep up with women's college softball, you would have noticed some east coast and midwestern colleges winning the College World Series or ending up in the top 10. If you examined the teams real close you noted thatat least one third to one half of the team's players were from the southwest. One of the reason's softball players from the southwest are highly prized comes from their ability to play Fall Ball. The great weather of the southwest allows softball teams to play year round. This is something other parts of the country can not take advantage of due to seasonal weather conditions: snow, rain, hurricanes, or tornadoes.
I would encourage you to stop by your community's local softball field and watch the ladies of winter fulfill the motto: Play hard of go home. Play hard they do, from the very young in ponytail leagues to the 12, 14 or 16 and Under leagues. It's exciting fast paced action filled with stolen bases, back door slides, squeeze plays, and booming home runs.
This fall listen for the cry - "Play Ball!"
