Hollywood celebrities and radio personalities converged on Tomahawk Field, at John Burroughs High School, for the second annual Celebrity Softball Game.
The event, which had the celebrity players facing off against the Burroughs faculty, was the concept of JBHS alumni and former head softball coach
Nick Schepperle.
The inaugural game was such a huge success that several of last year's celebrity players began contacting the softball program in January to secure a spot on this year's team.
The celebrity team starred
Corbin Bleu, "High School Musical 1 & 2";
Marsha Ramos, mayor, City of Burbank;
Gary Bric, Burbank City Councilman;
Marcelo Tubert, "Cory in the House;"
Carmen Argenziano, "Stargate SG-1," "CSI: NY;"
John Littlefield, "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition;"
David Reivers, "24," "My Name is Earl;"
Mirelly Taylor, "Once in a Lifetime," "Numb3rs;"
Nadine Stenovich, "Another World;"
Julio Oscar Mechoso, "The Lost City;"
Chuck Hoyes, "Field of Dreams;"
Eileen Grubba, "Monk;"
Chyna, WWE wrestler;
Sarah McElligot, "Onion Movie" (coming out on DVD June 3);
Hadeel Sittu, "General Hospital;" and
Omid Abtahi, FX's "Over There," Showtime's "Sleeper Cell."
The faculty players included
Norman Arguelles (math, track & field coach);
Todd Berry (world history);
Kristina Garcia (health);
Jamie Gibbs (social studies);
Scott Hatch (social studies, baseball coach);
Richard Piper (social studies); Mike Silva (boy's JV baseball coach);
Jill Tobin (science);
Randy Tobin (substitute teacher); and
Hung Truong (counselor).
The master of ceremonies for this year's game was
Bryan Suits, radio personality from KFI AM640. Suits, recently heard on KVI in Seattle, also served as a member of the Army National Guard, with tours of duty that included Bosnia, Iraq and Operation Desert Storm.
The JBHS softball program is thankful to the many sponsors who generously supported the event. In addition to our sponsors, the varsity and JV players "volunteered" their time, and many of the softball parents worked tirelessly to plan and execute this major fundraiser.
Tim Dow, Starbucks district manager and softball coach, put on his official umpire's uniform and took a lot of "abuse" from the players. A special thank you goes to the Burroughs baseball program for making the Tomahawk Field and Tee Pee concession stand available; the city of Burbank (Mayor Ramos and Councilman Bric); and Net Global (
Cooper Bayliss).
