The news was not good: Burroughs High School (12-9, 7-4) starting pitcher and senior
Jade Terry had strained her wrist during a previous game and she would not be able to pitch against the Arcadia Apaches (11-4, 11-0). Also on the DL (disabled list) was outfielder
Bri Casillas, who injured her knee during the Hoover game. Head coach
Nick Schepperle looked at his roster and made the needed adjustment for the contest against the Pacific League leaders at
George Izay Park.
On the mound for Burroughs was
Lizzie Peters with
Katie Budrick catching. At the top of the 1st inning, Arcadia managed one run on a single and two Burroughs errors. The Indians were unable to respond as they went down 1-2-3 in their half of the inning. In the 2nd inning, Arcadia recorded two more runs on two singles, a triple, and the third Burroughs error in the game. The Burroughs batters continued to struggle against Arcadia as they went down in order. The 3rd inning saw Peters struggle against the league leaders as she gave up three more singles. However, Arcadia could not capitalize on the hits and ended the inning leading 3-0.
Caiti Block started the Indians' half of the inning with a single to first base. The next batter reached base on a fielder's choice, but Block was out on the force. Three batters later, Burroughs was out of the inning - still scoreless. The 4th inning saw Arcadia increase their lead as seven batters pushed across two runs on two singles and a Burroughs error. The Indians were unable to score on three batters. In the top of the 5th inning, the Apaches added their final two runs to the scoreboard as Peters gave up a single and a triple. The bottom of the inning saw Arcadia record their sixth and seventh strikeouts of the game as the Indians sent only three batters to the plate. Peters walked the lead off batter in the top of the 6th inning, but the Indians held off Arcadia, as the next three batters did not score. Burroughs mounted their only offensive push of the game when
Kerry Hodgins singled and advanced to second base on a fielder's choice. With two outs in the inning, Hodgins was left on base as the next batter popped out to the first baseman.
Lizzie Peters returned to the mound at the top of the 7th inning, attempting to hold off Arcadia in the hopes that the Indians offense could get started. Although she gave up two more hits (10 on the game with one walk), the Burroughs defense backed her up and shut down the Arcadia offense. The bottom half saw the Apaches walk
Brittni Spear, the lead off batter. She was unable to advance as the next three batters went down in order. This was a tough loss for the Indians, but one that saw the team hold their own with the injuries to Casillas and Terry. Up next for Burroughs will be a second round game against the Nitros of Glendale.
