Blog Entry 2 of 68 The Forgotten Sports
Basketball, softball, or volleyball - ever notice only the top 20 teams get covered? There just isn't enough print space to feature all teams. I have shot youth sporting event photos free of charge for over 15 years. Ask me about shooting your team and their next tournament; I will also write about it for all to read. During Winter 2006, I will be found at Olive Recreation Center, in Burbank - shooting ASA fall ball. RYTAC

Tailgaters Celebrate Opening of Season
Contributed by: Richard Colon   on 9/4/2006

Saturday morning arrived with a high level of expectation as the 2006-2007 college football season opened. After weeks of emailing and calling fellow tailgaters, we loaded up the SUV and headed to the Rose Bowl for the UCLA Bruins versus the Utah Utes game.
We arrived at the Rose Bowl, paid the golf course parking fee, then spent the next half hour being directed to a spot near a tee box on the golf course. It was apparent the preseason game was also a warm up event for the stadium parking staff - they showed the disorganization of a rookie team. After parking and walking to the "grassy knoll" near Gate B, we met up with our band of Bruin supporters.
Each group of family or friends that arrived added something to the occassion but excitement really crested when Sara B., the Tailgate Princess, appeared. Sara can be counted on to plan an elaborate menu with at least 5 - 6 courses. She also hauls in camp chairs, tables, cups, plates, and occassionaly a TV. Today's bill of fare was vintage Sara as we feasted on sandwiches, Chinese chicken salad, side dishes, and assortedfancy desserts. She was even kind enough to provide soft, chewable foods to accommadate my discomfort from having a wisdom tooth pulled the day before. Everyone had a great time catching up on kids, work, and gossip. The last time this group was together was the 2005 UCLA vs. USC game.
Thirty minutes before kickoff, our group made quick work of packing leftovers and gear into Sara's SUV. We then loaded up on bottled water and headed for our seats inside the Rose Bowl. Don't get me wrong, the game was entertaining and at times intense. However, if you have never experienced a pre-game tailgate party, join us at the grassy knoll next Saturday as UCLA takes on Rice. I promise to bring some goodies from the famous Cuban bakery in Burbank.
