Blog Entry 19 of 21 Adventures in Parenting

I am a valleynews.com staffer, wife, and mom. My husband of two years and I had our first child in February. I will write here occassionally about my adventures with baby Frank plus all the wonderful things going on in Burbank and Glendale (as well as the surrounding communities)dealing with children.

Hundreds of children from the Peyton-Grismer neighborhood are invited to a Back to School picnic on Aug. 25 where they will be treated to free school supplies and hair cuts, among other things.

Burbank's Connect with your Community is coordinating the 4th annual celebration, which will take place from 11:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. in the Peyton-Grismer community, one of five neighborhoods in the city that officials want to focus on and which has gone through a revitalization during the past couple of years.

The event, which will be held in the parking lot of 1819 Grismer Ave., between Glenoaks and San Fernando boulevards, will feature live flamenco dancing, a salsa band, a caricature artist, arts and crafts activities, a bike-tune up workshop, games, giveaways, information booths, and free food.

"We will prepare children and parents for back-to-school," said Gaby Flores, community resources coordinator. "We want to instill a desire for higher learning in these communities and we want the families to feel connected to their community."

The 70-unit, multi-family residential site is home to about 150 children, many of them Latino. The purpose of the event is to provide educational resources and encourage life-long learning for parents and children in a fun-filled environment.

Organizers said they expect about 400 kids to take advantage of the goodies, which include backpacks stocked with lunch bags, pencil cases, binders and more.

In attendance will be the Community Development Department, Parks, Recreation, & Community Services, Burbank Library Services, Burbank Workforce Connection & Youth Employment, Burbank Police Department, Burbank Housing Corporation - Peyton Grismer Activity Center, Burbank Unified School District-Burbank Adult School, Burbank Community YMCA, Kids' Community Dental Clinic, Boys & Girls Club of Burbank, Providence St. Joseph's Center for Community Health Improvement and Kids Are 1st.

For more information about the event, which is sponsored by a number of community businesses and organizations, call Flores at (818) 238-5271.

The Burbank Unified School District resumes classes Aug. 27. For more information, visit www.burbank.k12.ca.us/.
