Fashion show to benefit Cancer program
Contributed by: Angie Valencia   on 7/18/2007

Glendale Adventist Medical Center will be hosting on Aug. 12 a fashion show benefiting the hospital's Cancer Center.

The show, titled Lights, Camera, Fight Cancer, will be from 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Hilton, 100 W. Glenoaks Blvd., Glendale, and will feature 20 models, including cancer patients, physicians and hospital staff.

Proceeds will go to toward Glendale Adventist's cancer program, which offers state-of-the-art technology, support groups and other services. Organizers are expecting up to 300 people to attend.

"Our mission is to support our community," said Melina Thorpe, RN, director of Cancer Services. "If you have cancer you don't need to travel far away from home. We're here."

In return, Thorpe said, she would like to see the community show their support on Aug. 12 by attending the event, expected to raise more than $20,000.

According to the American Cancer Society, about 1,444, 920 new cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed this year. More than 1,500 people a day are expected to die of cancer in the same time period.

The numbers are alarming and the local community is lucky to have the Cancer Center, certified as a Community Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Program by the American College of Surgeons, right in their own backyard.

"The Cancer Center is a place everyone in Glendale should know about and support," said Valen Watson, the show's creative director. "We thought it (the fashion show) would be a great opportunity to approach the women in Glendale and let them know about the Cancer Center in a way that would be fun for everybody."

Aside from showcasing local designers, the fashion show will feature outfits from the movies. Organizers have partnered with a major Hollywood movie studio, giving them access to more than 2 million pieces in their wardrobe collection.

Attendees also will be treated to lunch, a silent auction, and there will be vendors from which to shop from.

Tickets are $100 each and includes a gift bag. For more information, call (818) 409-8100. To learn more about the hospital, visit www.glendaleadventist.com.
