Homeless screenwriter takes dream to picket line
Contributed by: Fronnie Lewis   on 2/19/2008

Thousands of WGA writers hoisted picket signs, chanted union slogans, and wore down a lot of shoe leather during the 100-day strike.

Frequently strikers would be joined on the picket lines by supporters, among them, a 41-year-old homeless screenwriter with a dream project he is out to promote anyway he can.

Rodney Peterson says he was a disc jockey for 15 years. In 2006, he returned to Southern California from out-of-state, and fell on hard times after an episode with some neighbors in Beverly Hills.

Peterson would not discuss the details, but said the events motivated and inspired him to write a screenplay, "Cutting Confessions." Rodney pitches his script as an unusual fate-driven love story.

Rodney now lives in a Pasadena shelter. In mid-December, he began riding buses and trains to WGA strike picket locations using some of the money he manages to scrape together each week.

I met Rodney on Thursday, Feb. 7, during the mass WGA march on Disney Studios in Burbank. You couldn't help but notice Rodney. Despite the unseasonably warm temperatures, he was draped in a coat and towed two bags filled with his belongings (including a computer) behind him.

Rodney is not a guild member, but he toted a picket sign and sported a WGA cap in support of the striking writers.

Rodney admitted self-promotion was another reason he walked the picket line. His dedicated picketing, congenial manner, and zeal for his screenplay paid off. While picketing he struck up conversations with many entertainment professionals like WGA-West Vice-President David N. Weiss, whose screenwriting credits include "Shrek 2" and "Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius." Rodney says Weiss offered to read his script.

I asked Rodney if he considered his time on the picket line a success? Quickly, he tossed out that famous quote, "Success is a journey not a destination."

As we continued to walk around the Disney complex, Rodney rattled on excitedly about his dream project. The film. The book. The story. He confessed promoting his project was, "the hardest thing I've ever had to do." Rarely, did Rodney mention his personal predicament of being homeless. He was all about the deal.

Rodney considers his struggle just, "part of the process." One thing is for sure he is definitely a dreamer. Maybe, even a talented screenwriter. It would be nice to see Rodney get a Hollywood break and chance to prove himself.

There's a story within a story. One day it might be a true "rags to riches" account of Rodney's life. Thanks for letting us know about him, Fronnie. I'll be looking for his name in the credits of any film about an usual fate-driven love story. Cutting Confessions, right? Now, what's your next assignment?
