The city of Palmdale is joining with Los Angeles County Probation and Los Angeles Juvenile Superior Court to host a Teen Court program from 3:30-5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, at the Palmdale City Council Chamber, 38300 Sierra Highway, Suite B.
Teens interested in signing up as Teen Court jurors can contact Families in Action at 661-267-5665 to register.
"Teen Court is a diversion program for first-time juvenile offenders," said
Kari Robertson
, family development supervisor for the city of Palmdale.
"It does not determine guilt or innocence, but only the consequences for an admitted offense. It is a completely voluntary program that is designed to allow teens to experience constructive consequences for their actions, with the potential of having their charge or charges erased from their permanent record if the teen completes the terms of his or her Teen Court contract satisfactorily," she added.
The four main objectives of Teen Court include intervention by diverting first time offenders out of the traditional juvenile justice setting, prevention by stopping further delinquency by empowering and educating youth, development by providing young people with avenues for positive development and personal success, and accountability by encouraging youth and families to take responsibility for juvenile crime.
For more information or to participate on the Teen Court jury, contact Robertson at 661-267-5665 or by e-mail at fia@cityofpalmdale.org.
