The members of the Palmdale Playhouse's Summer Theatre Camp, who will perform the classic "Alice in Wonderland" on Aug. 1-3, came up with a creative way to help raise funds for their camp-offer patrons the opportunity to win a custom-decorated "Alice in Wonderland"-themed chair.
The Playhouse campers designed seven chairs to reflect the theme of this year's camp "Alice in Wonderland." The chair themes include Alice, Queen of Hearts, Cheshire Cat, Down the Rabbit Hole, Deck of Cards, Tweedledee and Tweedledum and Humpty Dumpty.
Patrons can win one of the chairs by purchasing opportunity tickets for only $1 each. The purchaser can designate which chair he or she would like to win.
"When you put together a group of talented teens, you can never be sure what's going to happen," said Palmdale Playhouse volunteer
Susan Reinert
. "For the members of our group, that talent has translated into a very creative fundraising idea. "I think this camp not only teaches them the aspects of theatre-the acting, props and set-but I also think it is truly a learning experience for kids," she said. "In addition to formal classes, campers also have some unstructured time to explore other aspects of theater, and project this was great for those more detailed oriented students."
The idea came about when Reinert asked campers what they would like to do for the lobby display for this year's camp show. A suggestion was made to recreate the Mad Hatter's Tea Party and Reinert parlayed this idea into the chairs.
"We had been talking about doing a project and they had been talking about the Mad Hatter's Tea Party, and I thought maybe just the chairs," Reinert said.
Nineteen of the 39 campers worked on the project.
Some of the suggestions for the chairs came from camper's characters such as the Tweedledee and Tweedledum chair. Other chair ideas were chosen based on the style of the chair, such as the Queen of Hearts chair.
The chairs for the project were all purchased at thrift stores by Reinert, who cleaned them and stripped the old paint off before donating them to the summer camp.
Opportunity tickets will be sold during each performance of the show and are also available through the Playhouse box office. The drawing will be held after the last camp performance on Sunday, Aug. 3.
Performances of "Alice in Wonderland" are at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 1 and 2 and 2 p.m. Aug. 3.
Prices are $10 for adults and $6 for seniors, students, military personnel andchildren 12 and younger.
Box office hours are 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays and two hours prior to show time on Saturday and Sunday.
