The city of Palmdale broke ground for a new senior center on Wednesday, May 14, with Mayor
Jim Ledford
, Mayor Pro Tem
Steve Knight
, Director of Parks and Recreation
Russ Bird
, Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Chair
Don Jacobson
and Senior Center Advisory Board member
JoAnn Strauss
on hand to officiate the ceremony.
The new senior center will be located at 930 East Avenue Q-9.
When completed, the senior center will be 14,179 square feet and will offer many break-out rooms for dance and exercise programs.
It will also have a computer room, billiards room, conference room, auditorium/nutrition area with a retractable stage, large patio area and TV nook area.
"I am very excited for the seniors in our community as we will be able to provide them with a new, state-of-the-art senior center that will provide many wonderful services," said Bird. "We currently provide many programs for our seniors and we expect to enhance our services when the new center is built."
The expected completion date is April 2009.
The senior center will be built using U.S. Department of HUD Section 108 loan guarantee funds, Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), State of California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) Workforce Housing Reward Program funds and Redevelopment Funds.
