City employees excel in academy
Contributed by: City of Lancaster on 7/17/2008

City officials are working hard to ensure that only the brightest and best-qualified employees attain positions at the city of Lancaster.

To aid in this effort, the city's human resources department has instituted the Academy for Great Public Service.

"City employees are what drive the city's day-to-day functions, from traffic signals and street repairs to approving business licenses and providing quality community courses," said Mayor R. Rex Parris. "To continue offering these services efficiently, it is essential that we choose only the best applicants to advance within the organization."

The academy, started in July 2007, grew out of the desire for an internal training program and the need for succession planning. It offers a variety of courses to all city employees on an array of topics, including courses as diverse as leadership skills, work zone safety and the hiring process.

"The academy is a method of supplying our employees with the supervisory and management skills they need to advance," said Human Resources Director Beverly Glode. "Through this program, we are preparing the next line of future leaders."

As an added bonus, the program has the potential to increase employee retention and thus keep some of our community's greatest minds right here in Lancaster.

The academy offers the opportunity for career growth and advancement in a positive working environment without ever leaving the Antelope Valley.

All city employees are eligible to take courses through the academy. Some classes, such as first-aid and CPR, are mandatory for all staff members. Employees can find and register for courses online through the city's internal intranet. A simple departmental approval process is all it takes for staffers to make the next step in advancing their careers.

"The training program is a great asset to the city and its services," said Parris. "It not only helps employees attain higher positions and grow increasingly satisfied with their work, it also improves the quality of the work that they perform. When city services improve, our entire community benefits."
