Delegates from the City of Palmdale's Sister City Poncitlán, Jalisco, Mexico will be visiting for five days as part of the two cities' ongoing affiliation and to celebrate the 35th anniversary of their sister city relationship.
Delegates arrived on Oct. 8 and will enjoy a number of activities sponsored by the United States Sister Cities organization and the City of Palmdale.
A 35th Anniversary Dinner Gala will be held at 7 p.m. on Oct. 10 at the Larry Chimbole Cultural Center. The dinner will featuring live entertainment, performances and exhibits provided by the Palmdale Playhouse's City Players, Palmdale Children's and Community Choirs, Palmdale Youth and Community Orchestras, Palmdale Writer's Roundtable and Palmdale Visual Arts Group.
During their visit, the delegates will also enjoy a dinner cruise at Marina del Rey, a day at the Fall Festival and various other events with the host families.
"We are proud of our long-standing partnership with Poncitlan, which helps to foster a greater understanding among people from culturally diverse backgrounds," said Palmdale Mayor
Jim Ledford
.
Palmdale celebrated its silver anniversary as a sister city of Poncitlán, Mexico in 1999. The city of Palmdale chose Poncitlán as its Sister
City in 1974 because the two cities shared rural similarities. At the time, Palmdale's population was only 11,000 but has now grown to 147,897.
President
Eisenhower
initiated the Sister City Program in 1956. This program works to develop one-on-one community relations with cities in other countries and provides Palmdale residents the opportunity to visit Mexico or volunteer under the sister cities relationship.
For more information about the Sister City program, please contact
Jose Luis Rodriguez
, president of the Sister City committee, at 661-947-7740 or by e-mail at luis1485@yahoo.com.
