LMAG presents "An Artistic Odyssey" exhibit
Contributed by: City of Lancaster on 8/13/2007

The City of Lancaster Museum/Art Gallery is pleased to present its new show, "An Artistic Odyssey - A One Woman Exhibit Featuring Artwork By Tandy Zorba," on display from August 18 through September 30. A free opening reception takes place on Saturday, August 18, from noon to 4 p.m. This is the perfect time to meet the artist and learn about her artistic styles and influences.

A graduate of the Chouinard Art Institute (now the California Institute of the Arts), Zorba creates a variety of art pieces that are not necessarily contained within one style. She states that she makes "peoplescapes," which are not people in front of landscapes, but the people within whom one can see a "being," and the landscape of a "human" thought. She always tries to create what is moving, and what is about feeling rather than features in portraits. She feels that her art should connect artist and observer in the common understanding that -- beyond our differences -- we humans share universal feelings, and silent modes of communication that transcend language and culture.

It is a wonderful experience to see the "evolutionary art trek" an artist has taken through her life; what were the experiences that influenced one's creations? Visitors will be able to see firsthand Zorba's artistic episodes in this show.

When she was 21 she went on a trip to Europe and ended up in the high mountains of Greece, in the village of Delphi. That is where she met her future husband, Nikos Vouzas-Zorbas. Although they now reside on a ranch in Agua Dulce, they return frequently to Greece.

In describing her artwork Zorba states: "I have lived half my life in multi-cultural America, where the world comes in search of a better existence; and the other half in Greece, a crossroads for thousands of years, where cultures have met, clashed, and assimilated. My art is not who I am. It is simply where I've been. My artwork is more than technique or training, more than education, shows or accolades. It is the people I've known, my cross-cultural family, the places that have brought us together, and the stories we tell in continuance. I have traveled an artistic odyssey to arrive at one thought: we are Many, and we are One, and we are the greatest art form on the planet."
