During the Lancaster City Council meeting last Tuesday night, closed session proceedings were held to review Antelope Valley groundwater cases that involve potential litigation actions.
"Our current situation impels every elected leader to speak with candor, and sit down at the same table for decisive action," said Vice Mayor
Ronald D. Smith
.
The City Council discussed the cases and established direction during deliberation. The following statement was issued by the Council once they returned to the public session:
"An equitable settlement is always better than costly and time-consuming litigation. We believe that the solution to water adjudication should be for the benefit of all the citizens in the valley," Smith said. "We are in an economic downturn and drought conditions. We should not take any action which would reduce the supply of water available to our citizens and farmers. We should aggressively pursue a swift settlement.
"The water adjudication is a top priority for the future of our valley and our citizens. We should not cut back the current pumping levels for our citizens, our water purveyors, or our farmers," Smith added. "An independent state-appointed watermaster could monitor the aquifer over the next several years and make adjustments accordingly."
Because discussions of potential litigation were conducted in closed session, further details cannot be released at this time.
