The Palmdale Playhouse is inviting residents to join one of its three choirs - the Palmdale Children's Choir for singers ages 8 - 12, (younger singers may participate after an audition with the choral director), the Palmdale Youth Choir for singers ages 13 through 17 and the Palmdale Community Choir for singers over 18 years old.
The choirs are part of a performance-based choral program offered through the city of Palmdale providing an opportunity for musical expression and personal development in a supportive and joyful environment.
"If you enjoy singing and building new friendships, the Palmdale Playhouse invites you to join one of its choirs," said Cultural Arts/Theatre Manager
Dea McAllister
. "You don't need any prior experience in choir singing."
All three choirs meet on Tuesday nights from September through May. The Children's Choir meets from 4-5 p.m.; Youth Choir from 5-6 p.m.; and Community Choir from 6-8 p.m.
All rehearsals are at the Palmdale Playhouse, 38334 10th St. East in Palmdale.
To join any of the three choirs, attend the Registration Fun Faire on Tuesday, Aug. 21 or Wednesday, Aug. 22 from 6-8 p.m.
A parent and participant meeting will be held on Thursday, Aug. 23 at 6 p.m. to acquaint new members with Palmdale Playhouse policies. The fee to join is $60 for residents of Palmdale and $65 for non-residents. This fee covers all classes in the first session, from Sept. 4 to Dec. 16, including the Spirit of the Holidays public performance in December. T
he second session runs from Jan. 7 through May 18 and includes the Summer Celebration performance in May.
The choirs are under the direction of the Rev.
John P. Crocker, Jr.
, who brings with him an infectious enthusiasm for singing. Crocker has expanded the youth and community choir's repertoire to include gospel, jazz and show tunes in four-part harmony.
Crocker holds a master's degree in choral music education and a bachelor's degree in operatic voice. He is currently the vocal music instructor at Antelope Valley High School in Lancaster.
Crocker's musical theater credits include "Fiddler on the Roof," "Guys and Dolls," "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" and "Love Is Where You Find It." He is most proud of his portrayal of the runaway slave, Jim, in the musical "Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn." Crocker has played this role four separate times.
Choir accompanist
Molly Stecker
is an accomplished composer who holds long-standing memberships in the Music Teacher's Association of California and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.
