The Palmdale City Library's mystery book discussion group called "Mystery, Murder and Mayhem" will discuss the book "The Big Sleep" by
Raymond Chandler
at 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 8, at the Palmdale City Library, 700 East Palmdale Blvd.
The event is free and open to anyone interested in mystery novels.
"The mystery book discussion group provides an opportunity for mystery lovers to discuss some of the best books in the mystery genre," said librarian
Chice Davison
of the Palmdale City Library.
"In 'The Big Sleep,' a dying millionaire hires Philip Marlowe to handle the blackmailer of one of his two troublesome daughters," Davison said. "But Marlowe finds himself involved with more than extortion. Kidnapping, pornography, seduction and murder are just a few of the complications he gets caught up in. The story evokes the essence of Southern California in the 30's, and is infamously complex and hard to follow, with many characters all double-crossing and triple-crossing each other.
Chandler wrote the book in 1939, and it was the first of the Philip Marlow detective series. "It changed the style of the detective novel forever and is considered one of Chandler's greatest works," Davison said.
The discussion also provides disabled access with 72 hours' notice. To request special aids for the disabled or for more information, please call the Palmdale City Library at 661-267-5600 or TDD 661-267-5167.
