Writers’ Roundtable accepting short story entries
Contributed by: John Mlynar on 11/6/2007

The city of Palmdale and the Palmdale Playhouse Writers' Roundtable are accepting entries for the 12th Annual Short Story Contest through 5 p.m. Thursday Nov. 29.

The contest has two age categories - youth (14 and under) and adult (15 and over).

There is a $10 fee for each entry with no limit to the number of entries allowed.

The theme for this year's contest is "Current Environmental Concerns."

Submissions must address the theme; be typed and double-spaced on plain white 8 ½" x 11" paper; include the entrant's name, address, age (if under 15), e-mail address, phone number and story title on each page; and not exceed 2,000 words.

Entry fee checks should be made payable to City of Palmdale and include driver's license number and expiration date. Contestants may mail or bring submissions to the Palmdale Playhouse, Writers' Roundtable Short Story Contest, 38334 10th St. E., Palmdale, CA 93550.

Prizes are awarded for first, second and third place in each category. Prizes include gift certificates to Barnes & Noble Booksellers, a one-year membership to the Writers' Roundtable (a $60/$65 value) and an awards certificate.

Winners will receive their awards at the Writers' Roundtable Short Story Presentation during the Palmdale Playhouse Spirit of the Holidays Celebration on Thursday, Dec. 13, at 7:30 pm. All entrants, families and the public are invited to attend the free presentation ceremony.

The Writers' Roundtable director, selected Palmdale Playhouse staff and volunteer literary judges will choose the winning short stories through a blind judging process.

The judges' decisions are final and entries will not be returned. Copyright remains with the author.

The Palmdale Writers' Roundtable is open to writers of all genres, including fiction, journalism, children's stories, poetry and screenplays. Members meet the first and third Tuesday of every month at 5 p.m. for youth and 7 p.m. for adults at the Palmdale Playhouse.

The goal of the program is to provide a forum where ideas and styles can be shared in a supportive atmosphere.

For more information about joining the Palmdale Writers' Roundtable or participating in the contest, please contact Jo Anne Smith at the Palmdale Playhouse at (661) 267-5684.
