The city of Palmdale and the Palmdale Playhouse Writers' Roundtable are still accepting entries for their 12th annual poetry vontest.
The submission deadline is 5 p.m. Thursday, May 1. The contest has two age categories - youth (14 and under) and adult (15 and over).
There is a $5 fee for each entry, with no limit to the number of entries allowed.
All entries must be typed on plain white 8 ½" x 11" paper and include the poet's name, address, age (if under 15), e-mail address (if available), telephone number and poem title on each page.
Checks should be made payable to city of Palmdale with driver's license and expiration date on them. Contestants may mail submissions to the Palmdale Playhouse, Writers' Roundtable Poetry Contest, 38334 10th St. E., Palmdale, CA 93550. They can also bring them to the Palmdale Playhouse directly.
First-, second- and third-place winners in each category will win prizes, including gift certificates to Barnes & Noble Booksellers, a one-year membership to the Writers' Roundtable (a $60 / $65 value) and an awards certificate.
Winners will receive their awards at the Writers' Roundtable poetry presentation during the Palmdale Playhouse Summer Celebration at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 15. The celebration is open to the public.
The director of the Writers' Roundtable, selected Palmdale Playhouse staff and volunteer literary judges will choose the winning poems through a blind judging process.
Decisions by the judges are final and entries will not be returned. Participants should keep a copy of the submission as they will not be returned. All copyrights remain with the authors.
The Palmdale Writers' Roundtable is open to writers of all genres, including fiction, journalism, children's stories, poetry and screenplay.
Program members meet the first and third Tuesday of every month at 5 p.m. for youth and 7 p.m. for adults at the Palmdale Playhouse.
The goal of the program is to provide a forum where ideas and styles can be shared in a supportive atmosphere.
