City of Lancaster awarded 'Best Places to Work'

An extensive study evaluating employee satisfaction and employer relations has selected the city of Lancaster as one of the "Best Places to Work."

The study was conducted by the San Fernando Valley Business Journal, Professionals in Human Resources Association, United Chambers of Commerce of the San Fernando Valley, and the Valley Industrial Association and Best Companies group. It combined surveys and other organizational data in order to locate the area's best employment opportunities.

"Lancaster's selection as one of the 'Best Places to Work,' highlights the city's dedication to people and community, showcasing the amazing working environment and opportunities available here at Lancaster City Hall," said Lancaster Mayor R. Rex Parris.

The award is based on the feedback obtained from employees and data collected outlining the organizational policies and structure of City Hall. The survey component of the study was conducted this past July, as employees were contacted in various departments throughout Lancaster City Hall.

In total, 350 employees were randomly contacted via e-mail and were asked to determine their attitudes about the city of Lancaster's leadership, corporate culture and communications, employees' role in the organization, work environment, relationship with supervisors, training and development, and pay and benefits.

The surveys were submitted directly to the organizations conducting the research, and participants' comments and answers remained anonymous. On Aug. 19, the city was congratulated by Best Companies Group for its selection as one of the best companies to work for.

"This recognition is indicative of the city's excellence overall," said interim-Assistant City Manager Lyle Norton. "Coupled with the rewarding work we do here at City Hall, the energetic atmosphere among employees is one of the reasons we have so many individuals that have continued working with the city for so many years. The fact that we have been recognized by an outside organization also shows that the city of Lancaster is performing at a level that is setting the bar in employment opportunities on a regional and national level."

"The recognition has not come overnight," pointed out Beverly Glode, director of human relations and risk management , "and it is a product of the city's continued effort to enrich employee opportunities and potential. Our employees are a major asset to this organization and we have continued to promote this idea through various programs that are designed to enhance city employees' lives."

Lancaster's human resources and risk management office has been involved in setting up several programs and opportunities for city employees over the past several years.

A training program through the Institute for Great Public Service has promoted management and leadership skills, offering intensive courses for employees.

Such programs provide employees with the opportunity to progress their job skills and knowledge, enhancing their potential in both performing their city jobs and advancing their careers.

The city has also been active in ensuring its employees are among the most competitive applicants in the area. The human resources department has taken steps to conduct comprehensive classification and compensation studies, in order to make sure City Hall is keeping up with industry standards and maintaining a competitive edge in recruitment.

"We have a unique environment here at City Hall," said City Manager Mark Bozigian. "Employees not only work here, but most of them live and have grown up in Lancaster. They care deeply about what they do, and the city has fostered a supportive environment in order to ensure employee development and appreciation. The effective work done at City Hall and the day to day positive atmosphere among employees are a direct reflection of our community's greatness and the commitment the city has to ensuring its continued success."

"It's great to have a study support what we here at City Hall already known," said Mayor Parris. "The city has an amazing staff and employee atmosphere. A unique set of individuals work for the city. They are in touch with the area and have a genuine love for what they do. It is really hard not to thrive under such a dynamic environment.

"The city of Lancaster has always taken a proactive stance in maintaining employee satisfaction and promoting each individual's strengths and potential," Mayor Parris added. "The city is devoted to making sure that Lancaster becomes the greatest city it can be, and this pursuit of excellence starts at home, here at City Hall."
